California’s State Board of Equalization implements all of the taxes for the state. These taxes include sales and use taxes, individual and corporate income taxes, and various other taxes.

The general state sales and use tax rate for California is 7.25%. Most cities and counties also impose a sales and use tax.

Individual income taxes are reported on Form 540. The return is due on April 15, or the next business day if the 15th falls on a holiday or weekend. The tax rates range from 1% to 9.3%.

Corporate income tax is reported on Form 100, or Form 100 S for S corporations. The tax rate is 8.84% for corporations other than banks and financial corporations, and 10.84% for banks and financial corporations. The return is due the 15th day of the third month after the close of the corporation’s fiscal year.

Other California taxes are the alcoholic beverage tax, cigarette and tobacco taxes, emergency telephone users surcharge, tax on insurers, diesel fuel tax, and motor vehicle fuel tax.
