The city of Irvine, California, like many cities in the United States, imposes its own sales and use tax in addition to the state sales and use tax. The sales tax rate is 1% of the amount paid for sales, leases, or rentals of tangible personal property, and for a few selected services.
Irvine also imposes a Transient Occupancy Tax of 8% of the amount paid for the rental of a hotel or motel accommodation. This tax is reported and remitted monthly to the Manager of Fiscal Services for the city of Irvine.
Another tax used to generate revenue for the city of Irvine is the Documentary Stamp Tax at $0.275 for each $500 or portion of $500 on any deed or other writing for the transfer or assignment of any realty within the city.
The city of Irvine levies Utility User’s Taxes as well. Separate User’s Taxes are imposed for telephone, electricity, and gas, all at the rate of 1.5% of charges.
