The city and county of Los Angeles, California impose various taxes on its citizens and businesses in order to support the city operations. All real and personal property located in the city and/or county is assessed and taxed on an annual basis. Property taxes are separated into secured and unsecured property taxes.
In addition to the state sales and use tax, the county imposes a tax of 1.25% for a local sales and use tax. A transient occupancy tax is charged for hotel, motel, or other lodging. The tax is at a rate of 12% of the amount paid for the lodging.
A documentary transfer tax is charged for the transfer of real estate. The rate is 55 cents for each $500 or portion of $500.
Los Angeles also imposes business license taxes for amusement parks and disposal facilities, as well as utility user taxes for telephone, electricity, and gas.
