The North Carolina Department of Revenue manages the taxes for the state. These taxes include individual and business income taxes, sales and use taxes, employee withholding taxes, and various other taxes.

The state general sales and use tax rate is 4.25%. Some cities and counties also impose an additional local sales and use tax.

Individual income tax is reported on Form D-400, and is due on or before April 15. If the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, taxpayers have until the next business day to mail the return. The tax rates for individual income taxes range from 6% to 8%..

Corporations report their income tax on Form CD-405, while S corporations use Form CD-401S, both of which are due by the fifteenth day of the third month following the end of the fiscal year. Partnerships report income using Form D-403, with a due date of the fifteenth day of the fourth month after fiscal year-end.

North Carolina imposes other taxes such as the withholding tax, property tax, tobacco products tax, motor fuels tax, alcoholic beverages tax, amusement gross receipts tax, bank privilege tax, and newsprint publications privilege tax.
