Rhode Island

The state of Rhode Island, like most states, imposes many different taxes on its residents. These taxes include individual and corporate income tax, sales and use tax, and various other taxes. The general state sales and use tax rate for Rhode Island is 7%.

Individual income tax is reported on Form RI-1040 for full year Rhode Island residents. Part year residents or nonresidents use Form RI-1040NR, and fiduciaries use Form RI-1041. The returns are due on April 15. If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, taxpayers have until the next business day to mail the return.

Corporations report their income tax using Form RI-1120, or RI-1120S for an S corporation, and the form is due by the fifteenth day of the third month after the end of the corporation’s taxable year. Form RI-1065 is used to report partnership income, and is due by the fifteenth day of the fourth month following the end of the partnership’s fiscal year.

Revenue is also generated for the state by imposing other taxes such as the alcoholic beverage import service fee, alcoholic beverage manufacturing tax, withholding tax, estate tax, banking institution excise tax, hotel tax, outpatient healthcare facility surcharge, and imaging services surcharge.
