The city of Chicago, Illinois imposes many taxes on its residents and those doing business in the city. The Chicago Department of Revenue administers the various taxes.
The employer’s expense tax is imposed on businesses with 50 or more employees conducting at least half of their duties in Chicago. The tax is $4 for each employee each month.
Cigarettes are taxed at the wholesale level at $0.034 per cigarette or $0.68 per pack. A tire fee of $1 for each new tire sold is also imposed. The city of Chicago, Illinois levies many other taxes, including amusement tax, gas use tax, electricity use tax, emergency telephone system surcharge, restaurant tax, telecommunications tax, vehicle fuel tax, hotel accommodation tax, liquor tax, occupation tax - electricity, occupation tax - natural gas, parking tax, and ground transportation tax.
